Tool Balancer & Spring Balancer Glossary

Terminology reference

Tool-balancer terminology is inconsistent across manufacturers, buyers and industries. This glossary explains the terms we use on Crossfire so “load balancer,” “weight balancer,” “spring retractor” and “zero-gravity balancer” do not get treated as if they mean exactly the same thing.

Tool balancer

A broad purchasing term for a mechanical device used to support and manage a suspended tool or load.

On Crossfire
We use “tool balancer” as an umbrella term, then identify whether the product is a retractor, zero-gravity balancer, hose balancer or specialty configuration.

Spring balancer

A balancer that uses spring force and a drum or similar mechanism to support a suspended load through a cable, rope or hose.

Manufacturer terminology
TECNA uses “spring balancer” broadly across its balancer families.

Tool retractor / spring retractor

A spring-supported device that applies return force so the suspended tool moves toward a rest position when released.

Choose it when
The tool should come back up or out of the way after use.

Zero-gravity balancer

A counterbalance device adjusted so the supported load can move through the working range with much less perceived weight.

Choose it when
The operator needs controlled movement rather than automatic return.

Load balancer / weight balancer

Broad search terms used for equipment that supports or counterbalances a load. They are useful discovery terms but do not tell you the mechanism.

What to verify
Whether the required product retracts, counterbalances, lifts or only supports the load.

Rated working range

The minimum-to-maximum load range for which a specific balancer model is designed and adjusted.

Selection rule
The complete suspended load must fall within the model's published working range.

Stroke / travel

The usable cable, rope or hose movement available from the balancer.

Selection rule
Choose enough travel to cover the real workstation movement without ignoring mounting geometry.

Bowden retractor

A spring retractor that transfers mechanical force through a flexible Bowden-style sleeve, allowing the balancer to be mounted away from the actual application point.

Typical use
Automation, moving arms, sliding rails, restricted overhead space and non-vertical applications.

Hose balancer

A spring balancer in which the hose both supports the pneumatic tool and supplies compressed air.

Typical use
Pneumatic assembly tools where separate hose and support management would create clutter.

ESD balancer

A spring-balancer family intended for electronics and ESD-protected production areas where electrostatic-discharge control is required.

Selection note
ESD requirements are environmental requirements in addition to load and travel.

ATEX balancer

A balancer family designed for applications covered by the European ATEX framework for equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Canadian note
ATEX should not be represented as automatic Canadian approval; the installation must be reviewed against the applicable Canadian requirements.

Food / washdown balancer

A corrosion-resistant spring-balancer family designed for food processing, sanitizing, moisture, steam and chemically aggressive cleaning environments.

Why it is different
TECNA's food-industry line uses stainless materials and food-friendly construction details intended for harsh cleaning environments.

Product-family details are based on current TECNA manufacturer information. Canadian ergonomic context is referenced to CCOHS and Government of Canada guidance. Final model selection still depends on the complete suspended load, travel, environment, mounting and application.
