What Size Generator Do I Need for My House?

For most Canadian homes, the right portable generator depends on what you want to keep running, whether the equipment has a motor that needs extra starting power, and whether you want gasoline, propane or natural-gas flexibility.

Quick answer: A 4,000W generator is generally suited to essential loads and lighter portable use. A 5,000W model can cover a practical group of essentials. An 8,200W to 9,500W generator is a better starting point for a home with a furnace, sump pump, refrigerator, freezer and other motor-driven equipment. Larger homes or homes with substantial 240V loads may require 11,500W, 14,500W or 20,000W.

There is no single generator size that is right for every house. The best approach is to identify the appliances you expect to operate at the same time, add their running wattage, account for starting surges, and then choose a generator with enough reserve capacity.

Start with the appliances you actually need

During an outage, most homeowners do not need every appliance operating at once. They usually want a combination of heat, water, refrigeration, lighting, communications and a few essential outlets.

  • Furnace blower or heating system
  • Well pump or booster pump

  • Refrigerator and freezer
  • Internet equipment, phones and computers

Running watts and starting watts are both important

Running watts are the power an appliance needs after it is operating. Starting watts are the temporary surge required to start a motor or compressor. A refrigerator, furnace blower, well pump and sump pump may draw much more power for a moment when they start than they use while running.

A generator can appear large enough based on its running-watt rating but still trip its overload protection when two motors start together. For that reason, do not size a home generator using only the total of the running watts. Leave reserve capacity for starting loads and for appliances that may start unexpectedly.

Best generator choices by common Canadian home situation

Small home, cottage or essential loads only

If your plan is to run a refrigerator, freezer, lights, internet equipment and chargers, the iGen4000DFc may be appropriate if you manage which loads operate together. It produces inverter power, supports gasoline or propane, and is easier to move than a large open-frame unit.

Practical backup for essential household equipment

Larger home or several motor loads

Do I need a transfer switch or interlock?

If you want to power selected household circuits through the electrical panel, you need a properly installed transfer switch or interlock system. A portable generator must never be connected to a home electrical system by plugging it into a wall outlet. That can backfeed the electrical system and create a serious hazard.

Have a licensed electrician confirm the generator connection, neutral configuration, grounding, inlet, cable and panel arrangement. Product pages may identify a generator as transfer-switch-ready, but that does not mean the installation is included.
